Our Operating Procedures

Collection and Transportation

BJE only collects from local authority DCFs (or receives from such via selected registered waste carriers), items of WEEE that are claimed to be in working order, or that appear to be in good condition.

The driver makes a visual inspection of each item to ensure that there is no obvious damage, that it is not dirty, that it is reasonably modern, and that it appears to have been protected from the elements.  They also checks that a label identifying the site of origin has been applied to every item; if not, he applies one.  If these criteria are not met, the item will not be collected.  Acceptable items are carefully loaded onto the collection vehicle, in such a way as to avoid damage in transit.

Receipt at BJE

Upon arrival at BJE, all items are carefully unloaded from the vehicle and stored in cages or batches, according to their site of origin. Any items found to have been damaged in transit will be placed in the ‘Reject Bay,’ pending safe delivery to another AATF specialising in breaking WEEE for materials recycling.

Sampling & Inspection

BJE inspects and records every item of WEEE received.

Items of WEEE are systematically removed from the reception area and taken to the Electrical Testing and Quality Control area, where a qualified electrician undertakes a full visual safety inspection of the item, checking for damage, missing components, general condition, etc.

If any obvious problems are discovered, the item is failed and the electrician applies a red ‘Fail’ sticker, onto which is recorded a unique reference code identifying the item and its site of origin. It is then placed in the Reject Bay for disposal, as above. If the item passes the visual inspection, the electrician performs a PAT (Portable Appliance Testing) test to ascertain electrical safety. If it fails the PAT test, a red ‘Fail’ sticker is applied, as above, and the item is placed in the Reject Bay for disposal.

If it passes the PAT test, the electrician proceeds to carry out a Quality Control procedure, which consists of some basic functionality tests, to establish that the item is fit for reuse, as originally intended, and, therefore, no longer constitutes a waste product.

Domestic Householders

Householders have a duty of care for safe disposal of their WEEE (Waste of Electrical and Electronics Equipment). With regards to hazardous waste, such as your television (TV) set, or your computer monitor, (or monitors), this means ensuring that these items are separately collected, to ensure that they can be treated and recycled in the appropriate manner.

We can arrange to collect your television or computer equipment. Please complete or contact form to find out more details about our service. If you wish us to collect your TV or monitor, we will arrange transport to collect from your home at a suitable time. Protect the environment through safe disposal and recycling of your television or computer.
